Darling Lily

Crinum flaccidum

Darling Lily

Scientific name: Crinum flaccidum

Other common names: Paroo Lily, Macquarie Lily or Murray Lily

The Darling Lily is one of only a few Australian plants that grow from a bulb.

The bulb of the Darling Lily is very large. These lilies grow along the banks of rivers and streams in the drier western plains areas of the Murray-Darling Basin. It can grow to about a metre high and half a metre wide with strap-like leaves and clusters of white to cream flowers.

The flowers appear in late summer to autumn and have a strong scent. They may last several weeks or months, then the flowers die back and the plant is not much more than a huge white bulb deep underground.
